Washington, DC Councilmember
Harry Thomas, Jr., Ward 5, shares Andrea "Aunni" Young in an exclusive interview the importance of how Federal dollars can be matched with District dollars to maintain and build on Langston Legacy Golf
Course, a federal historic landmark, a gateway to Ward 5 that sits at the Anacostia
River, is next to the 2nd oldest public housing, and is located in an area
where the U.S. National Arboretum is on the backside of the course.
Langston Legacy Golf Course was dedicated by Congress in 2010 and is a
federal course managed by Jimmy Garvin, 2006 Inductee into the African American
Golf Hall of Fame. Garvin is also Partner/President of Golf Specialists, Inc., an
organization that manages Langston and two other Washington, DC area golf
courses.
In the
video, Councilmember Thomas encourages the support of Langston Legacy Golf
Course as it impacts the lives of young golfers through community outreach,
education, life skills, and golf tournaments. Junior golfers can
participate in programs such as the Langston Junior Boys and Girls Golf Club,
the Jimmy Garvin All Stars, and a host of other empowering programs including
the Interpretive Education Center. Thomas discusses how Langston
education initiatives can be expanded through a new computer learning
center at property next to the golf course.
Thomas
speaks highly of those who support Langston, identified as "historic
memberships of heritage", saying Langston is a part of his daily regime, a
place where he continues the heritage of his father, Councilmember Harry Thomas
Sr. Councilmember Thomas, Jr. attributes Garvin with helping him master
the game of golf and Thomas says he has helped sponsor many programs at Langston to
benefit Washington, DC youth.
Langston
Legacy Golf Course provides an opportunity for Washington, DC youth to learn
the game of golf, golf course management and maintenance through its
programming.
